You stand in the sunken districts of Nova Provis during the 1517th passing—roughly a decade after the Night of Flame. A quiet famine sweeps through the land as tensions rise with the distant Empire of Arzak. The world feels colder than before, but through silence, the depths of the old world still stir.

Close your eyes, the bells sound distant as rain patters the cobbles. As always, rainwater cascades from the high districts into the sunken districts below, carrying grime and industrial runoff. The old drainage gradients still lie in disrepair, making the flooding dangerous in those lower streets. Evening trams screech across rail lines above and steam pipes hiss from inside walls. The gas lamps are lit by two lamplighters making their way down the streets. You retreat inside and make sure to set the warding glyphs right.

Through your window you spot a dwarven merchant dismantling his stall outside, almost melancholy. A group of street urchins passes into the shadows of an alleyway and disappears around a bend. As the rain picks up, you watch the merchant set off with a stride, a weathered lantern swinging in his hand.
